Help ! First time paint rear bumper with spray can.?
 

After research over internet, i decide to paint my rear bumper with spray can. This is how it looks:
I will describe here what i gonna do, so please take a look and give me any advice. This is my first time to paint a car.
1 - Use 180 grit sandpaper to sand it down and wash it.
2- Use the chemical compound to fill up the scratch.
3- Use 220 grit sandpaper to sand the chemical down and wash it.
4- Apply Primer coat to the bumper
5- Use 400 grit sandpaper to wet sand the primer.
6- Apply 3 coat of base coat to the bumper. 10 min each coat. Then wait for 24 hours.
7- Apply 2 clearcoat. 10 min each coat. Then wait for 24 hours and DONE.
Please give me some advise if i do it right.
Here is my questions;
1- Is it ok if i use touch up paint can when i apply the base coat because i can not find the spray can for the base coat.
2- If the touch up paint is ok, then what kind of primer coat i should use. Let say i will using Rust-Oleum brand.
3- How many touch up paint can i should buy for the whole bumper. Each can is 8.oz. Just try to save money.
4- Should i use different sandpaper grit ?

I'm not a P&B person so I'm not an expert.

I look into a chemical cleaner to be sure you get all of the oils and that off the surface. Tack rags will also help, I know you are washing but the tack rags will help.

Also, stop by a local auto paint store and talk with them. They can help with the primer question.

They can/could also mix the paint for you. For spray options, many paint stores can mix the paint and the add it to a "rattle" can....or there are simple sprayers you can buy - google or research "Preval sprayer".

It seems like not much people here use the spray can.

For such a large area, rattle canning it doesn't look good. If its just a small spot, you can blend it in better. Doing the whole bumper though, you'd see quite a few inconsistencies, mostly due to the spray can not having a evenly spraying nozzle.


If you do take it to a shop, and the cost is too high, consider doing the sanding/bodywork yourself, and then just have them finalize the prep, and then paint. That should cut off a few man hours of sanding, and lower the price.
