Hello.


My 01 LX Accord has the steering wheel air bag cover and stick shift console and center tray with a sticky finish (old wax/protectant?). I tried with Goop, dish soap, and Simple Green to clean it. It is now less sticky but still uncomfortable. Is there a cleaner that can remove all that stuff and restore it to the original (non-stick) texture?

Suggestions welcome.

Were you the original owner, or did you get it like that?

I would say to keep trying detergent to get it off, and most likely it will wear off with time.

Use really hot water, and a rough sponge, but make sure it doesnt scratch first. Also, if you use a sponge, let it sit for 30 seconds before you start scrubbing so the heat has a change to soak down and help lift the film.

 

I had the same problem and finally found the the right stuff to clean the sticky center console. My wife's nail polish remover. It took off a thick coat of sticky junk. It took some time but now I feel like I have a new car. The specific brand that I used in case they're not all the same was: Adios 100% Pure Acetone - nail sovent.

 

Try sanitizing wipes that what I use on my cb when it gets nasty. Just be careful not do use it when your car is sitting in direct sunlight. The alcohol will dry up fast and look bad.

 

a lot of that stuff can leave cracks in your dashboard so i'd be careful. only clean little parts at a time and see what happens so u don't screw up the whole part that you're cleaning.

 

I have a 2003 Civic with a very sticky/gummy Air Bag Cover. I tried cleaning it with alcohol, and while black stuff came off onto a white terry cloth rag, the cover remained sticky. So I put a little Gold Bond body powder on the rag, and spread it thinly over the sticky cover. It still looks pretty black, and is no longer noticeably sticky. Hopefully that will last another 13 years.
