1996 EX Auto Tran

Tranny hits a little hard on down shift and sometimes on upshift. It was my grandmother's car and sat idle over a year. AAMCO says the clutches are gone and needs rebuild.... Trans Doctor says they are getting a PO 275 code and trany fluid is leaking and low pressure so lets rebuild.... Both shops say don't change the fluid because it might screw things up worse...WTF!!?? I drove the car car home. My question is this: Can sitting up for over a year be the problem!!?? I know the ATF has never been changed and was low when I got it but I just don't think a Honda Tranny is that weak....Should I just drain the tran and fill it with new Honda fluid despite what the so-calledtrans experts say..HELP!!

Honda makes great manual transmissions... but of this generation the automatic transmission is known to have problems. One term used to describe the shifts is "shift shock". Basically it jerks changing gear. Can you describe the problem in greater detail? Is it slow going into drive? Does it dislike going into reverse? Does it jump changing gears? If you do a rolling stop will it jerk to get into gear? Does the transmission make and odd noises?

My guess is that you are just experiencing what normally happens to this generation's transmission but without more details I don't know what to tell you.

If it is still working fine change the fluid and live with it. If not then start finding a rebuilt tranny!

Rolling Stop... yes, this is when it hits worse. It is hard to guess because I don't know the car. My next angle of attack is to take it to Honda...CAACHING!!!! So I thought... Stokes Honda here in Summerville SC will check it out for 39.99$. I'm hoping Stokes doesn't need to rebuild my trans to pay their tachs for the week... I'll let you know....

I didn't finish answering your questions!!! Sorry. Upshifts seem a little jerky at times but without knowing this car I really can't say it is TERRIBLE. My gut feeling isif you think something is wrong with an auto....it is....

how much money do you think it will cost to have a shop rebuild an auto transmission? Either with a stock setup, or performance setup.

anyone ever put a shift kit on an accord? The mechanic says you can shift from 1-2-d3-d4 and it will act like a 4-speed stick. He said it will cost around $1500. has anyone done this?

OK before you do anything....

Change fluid and add 1 can of lube guard for imports. IF car has been sitting for a while that will help it out.
