96 accord auto trans problem *need help*

purchased a 96 accord ex with a f22b1/auto trans. the lady told me the trans was bad due to a leak that she was aware of but forgot to check the trans fluid level and ran it low. when i was looking at car i tried putting the car into d4 and it started making a loud growling noise so i immediately tried putting it in park, when it shifted into park it made a grinding type noise that sounded similar to the noise a manual trans makes when trying to put in reverse while still moving.

i bought the car and towed it home, bought a used transmission from a local junk yard and swapped them out. after getting the new trans in i filled it with fluid put it in d4 then to reverse a few times to make sure the fluid level was good and filled accordingly. went to test drive it and got to the end of the driveway and the car seemed to slip out of gear and when i tried to put it in park it made the same grinding noise as the first transmission. borrowed a code reader because the check engine light was on, only code was a p1253 for vtec connection fault. had a 30 replacement warranty from the junk yard so i decided to exchange it.

now onto tranny #3 got it installed and everything put back together filled with fluid (recommend honda genuine fluid) and went to take on a test drive after checking that d4 and reverse worked while still in the shop. backed it out of the shop and put it in d4 and made it about 5 feet this time and did the same thing again.

so now i have replaced the transmission twice and have the same problem and am totally stumped as to what the problem is.

any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. i have tried researching this problem only to read the posts and get a couple pages in only to read that the person gave up and decided to swap to a 5spd which is something i do not want to do.

Hey Habbabba, I had a 1195 accord that did the same thing. What happen to me is one of the axles pop out of the tranny. You may need new axles or try widing the c clip at the end of the axle. Make sure when you install them that you pop the axle in place. You may think it is in and it isnt. Yu really got to pop it. Unfortunately for me when it pop put the grinding from trying t put it in park made my tranny go bad.. So I am in the process of replacing mine..Hope this helps
