Accord Automatic Tranny swap from 97 into 98.....Possible?

Okay I searched many forums yesterday including this one for approximately 3-4 hours and my question may have been answered in someone else's question that was posted, but I couldn't find it, so I apologize if it was but please someone could you simply answer yes or no?

I have a 1999 Accord EX SOHC 3.0L VTEC automatic 4 speed can I replace transmission with a 97 Accord EX 4 speed auto tranny that is a VTEC engine as well?

If not what exactly is compatible with my car and keeping it automatic but hopefully not having the same issues as I have now?

Thank you, Thank you, and THANK YOU in advance! I am female and know nothing about cars so please speak slowly and if I have left out any important details needed to give me my answer please just let me know and I will immediately get the info.....)

W/O getting into extensive modifications you don't want to tackle, I think the answer is no. I checked car-part.com w/ a search for a replacement transmission for your car. It only shows the 99 Accord V6 as a donor. There are plenty of these available so this may be your best bet.

The potential problem w/ swapping a used transmission into your car is there is no garuntee the replacement transmission is a good unit. The salvage yard will generally replace the transmission if it turns out bad, but you're out the labor cost to replace the dud part. There may be insurance available that would cover this risk. I bought insurance for this risk for a motor replacement (~$200), but thankfully replacement engine was good so I didn't have to test whether the insurance was any good.

good luck

I agree with Tex, a lot of problems to do, costly to do and then You have to find someone in your area to do the deed..BUT! |Welcome to the HAF :)

if it's a v6 you need a v6 transmission. Can't use 4cyl trans they won't bolt up to a v6. But al the J series engines transmissions will bolt up to any v6.

V6

Both are V6 engines the 97 and mine the 99. I just realized I initially put 98 sorry that was a typo suppose to be 99. Sorry.

And thank you for the replies this has been such an ordeal and learning experience.

To be more specific, the 1997 V6 is a C27 engine which is non-vtec and found in the 80's Acura Legend and the 5th generation accord V6 95-97 model years. The 1999 V6 in your car is a J30 engine found in the Accord, Acura CL, etc. and is pretty different indeed. The only 97' models available with the J30 V6 like yours is the Acura CL that I know of with the Accord not seeing the J30 until 98'. I think the J series transmissions like g22 said are all interchangeable but there are a host of some automatic ones to avoid. I haven't gotten into the V6's as much but I've heard to avoid the 97-04 J30, J32, and J35 auto's used as they could potentially have a problem so I would aim for the 05+ model transmissions as your safest bet on getting a good one. Do get an insurance warranty on it used like Tex said also.
