How do you know when your brakes need bleeding? My pads and rotors seem fine but when i brake there is a lot of dead space and no pressure until i push them low. And if I hit them hard they push back. I don't have ABS.

Yeah sounds like they need some bleeding.

Actually might be more than just bleeding. Could be the master cylinder going bad, I think that was one of the symptoms.

I don't think its the master cylinder because it doesn't feel like the power brakes are failing, there is just not a lot of pressure... but if it is one of the symptoms I'll get it checked out... do you know the other symptoms?

Thanks for that link, but the difference is my brakes don't feel weak... I feel like I still trust them in a bad situation... and i don't have to push lower to stop the car, its just very airy (if thats a word)

The thread that Poser linked described a different problem. The difference can be a little subtle...

Air in the lines:
The brake pedal is initially soft & sinks low, but the brakes work. Usually the pedal comes up higher if you pump the brakes. Bleeding the brakes thoroughly should take care of this.

Bad master cylinder:
The brake pedal is firm when you first press it. But if you hold it with moderate or low pressure (like at a red light) it sinks slowly & smoothly to the floor. Usually the brakes work OK if you have to press them hard. Bleeding the fluid sometimes helps but it's only temporary.
