Default J30A1 in a 5th gen.

The J30A1 is an sohc 3.0 v6 vtec engine from the following:

  • 1997-1999 Acura 3.0CL
  • 1999-2003 Honda Advancier
  • 1998-2002 Honda Accord V6
I wanted to do something... different. Doesn't have to be completely unique, just a little less than average, which is why I'm attempting to steer clear of h series, and turbo f series engines.

I can get custom engine mounts for this motor, but I have two questions. One, will this engine physically fit in the bay, or is there a way I can make it fit without too much hassle?

Two, will this transmission work with my car? I have a 5th gen, '94 accord.

Oh, and I just read that the J30A4 is 20 lbs lighter and one inch shorter. Idk, still, if that would even fit... Just throwing that out there.

I believe the 5th gen 6cyl engine bay was bigger than the 4cyl. So I donno if it will fit.

I know you don’t want to hear this but the h22 will be a better swap all around. It will even be faster that the j series with less power. Honestly the v6's aren’t anything to get all excited about.

sohc vtec *thumbs down* more for economy not for performance

If you want to me “unique” then go for a n/a or boosted frank g22/23 engine. Not many ppl have them and not many ppl know there poetical...I'm in the works on one myself

I kept searching stuff like "j series accord swap" or "j series 5th gen accord" ... etc. No one has done it with a 5th gen. they've done it with civics and preludes, but not 5th gen accords.

And yeah, I'm almost positive that the 5th gen accords with the c series v6 had a larger bay, although it's not been unheard of for people to shove the c series v6 into an i4 bay. Granted, the v6 that came in the 5th gen was a smaller 2.7. The j30 is a 3.0 and the j32 is a 3.2. I don't think I'm going to even attempt it. I might end up wasting a good bit of money.

Maybe I'll give the g22 a shot. I need to do some reading. I wanna read up on k series, too, but from the specs I"m getting from wiki, the k20 is a 2.0. Which makes sense, I guess, but I don't want to put a 2.0 in my car. Maybe I'll do an h22 swap afterall. I'm still doing the research. I stopped worrying about it for a while, but I got excited about it again yesterday and now I want to do the sleeper build that I had planned from before.

Thanks, man.

k series will fit with no prob.

But be4 you get ahead of yourself...how much is your budget? K series is money to swap in. F/H series and g series frank engines are cheap to swap in. Also what are your power goals??

My budget varies. I just started college, and going in my first year there was a lot of things i had to buy that I wont have to rebuy next semester. I get about $4000 every semester for school, and only spend about $2300 of it. As of right now, my budget is around $1000, so most likely I'll put some money into working on minor fixes for my car. NEXT semester (about 4 months from now) I should have around $3500 saved from school and work. And if I really saved every penny, I'd have more. But I know I wont save every penny

So my budget, when the time comes for me to do a swap, I'll have about $3500.

As for power goals... I don't really know. I want to notice a big difference from the f22b. I wanna feel a nice kick when I give it the gas. Some hidden power that other drivers around me wouldn't expect to come from a '94 honda, ya know?

I would take your $3500 and swap a h22 with lsd tranny built it up some. Get a bisi header some cams full exhaust intake and modified intake manifold with a good tune you will have very very nice and noticeable power upgrade from that f22b engine. DOHC vtec engines are fun to drive...sohc vtec not even half as fun..lol

I think I'm sold on the h22 then. lol. lucky for me there's a Honda lot that sells, trades, and deals with everything honda, mostly accords. They can get me an h22 somewhat cheap.
