couple H22 questions

1) whats the difference between a H22a1 and the H22 type-s, i have a feeling its just the red valve cover and different cams, but i would like to know for sure.

also
2)I read in the latest modified mag that the timing belt tensioner on H22s fail fairly often, is this true, and if so is there a aftermarket one you can buy that isnt likely to break.

thanks
Cameron

RE: couple H22 questions

1) Different ignition setup at the distributor (internal vs. external coil), 50mm mains (h22a1) vs 55mm mains (type-s), compression and pistons10.6:1 (a1) vs. 11:1 (type-s), cams (type-s has more aggressive).

2) Many switch to the H23 tensioner. There is a write up on how to do it on Honda-Tech.com

also, H22A1 - USDM 4th gen Prelude w/ 190hp. H22A Type S - JDM 5th gen Prelude Type S w/ 220hp

what makes the Type S so beastly are the higher compression cams and pistons as previously mentioned as well as the factory port and polish. you can get a regular h22 and do all that stuff for cheaper than buying a Type S.

might be worth it for a grand lol, everywhere else ive seen at LEAST 2k more, usually 3k more than a regular swap. id say go for it if it's only a grand more. the mods we mentioned would be about that or a little more. but not 2-3k worth.

Also,
h22a1 = obdI
h22a4 = obdII
h22a S = obdII

Auto tensioners are what h22's use for adjusting the tension in the timing belt. People take them out when they decide to build their motor as they have been known to fail but for regular applications they work just fine. If you do decide to "upgrade" the tensioner than you can go with an h23 manual belt tensioner conversion.

yeah thats what i was planning on, getting the engine is the easy part, installing it is where it gets tricky.

i dont think i have enough knowledge to install it myself, i could probably physically get it in, but not wire it up.

and it costs more to have it installed than the engine costs.

think i might just have to bite the bullet and pay the money for someone to install it.
