Cylinder head bolt snapped!
ok so i have been fixing the cylinder head on my sisters 93 accord when i am torquing up the canshaft bolts and one decides it wants to snap! Bastard! anyone know of a way out witout having to send it to the shop. Thanks

got it sorted! snapped 2 more after that. I think the old bolts were just worn or someone over tightened them previously.

im prolly totally wrong on this one, but if you took all the other bolts out couldnt you just pull the head up? considering theres no head on the bolt.... then just use some vicegrips and a steel pipe?

One way of resolving this is to lay a nut w/ ID just smaller than the hole ID. Weld the nut to the broken end of the bolt and back the bolt out. Hopefully release of the tension when the head snapped out will allow removal fairly easily. This should not have happened. I agree w/ troy331 that someone probably yielded the bolts on previous installation w/ severe overtorque.
Not clear if he's got broken camshaft hold-down bolts or cylinder head bolts. If cylinder head bolts you could remove the cylinder head over the broken bolts and make welding a nut very easy. good luck |
