failed oil pump

2004 Accord Coupe V6 with 59K miles. Regular maintenance. My oil pressure light came on. Towed car. The first dealer said the oil pump had failed. They saw metal shavings in the oil pan. Said they'd never seen this problem with oil pump before. Called second dealer who also said they'd never seen this problem before. Had it towed to second dealer as I purchased and serviced the car there. First dealer did not put oil pan tear down back together (though they charged me $300) so second dealer could not do own test on oil pump but did see damage to bearings, crankshaft. At first recommended putting in a used engine with 44,000 miles for $3000+ with 1 yr. warranty. I wrote a long letter to service manager. He called Honda regional service representative. Now recommending replacing short block and oil pump for $3000+ but Honda will pay half. If cams need replaced Honda will pay half.

Is this the way to go, short block (new parts) vs. used engine? Should Honda do more since oil pump failure is very unusual? I feel I am going to pay up to $3000 for repairs to a problem that never should have happened. Any advice would be helpful

i feel your pain, but once its out of warranty i really think its more luck of the draw.
half the price sounds pretty damn good though for an out-of-warranty repair.

I am of the same opinion as nafango2. Breakdowns happen. Honda paying 1/2 of it sounds pretty good to me too. Unless there is a Honda Tech on here that thinks it should be covered under warranty? I really don't know much about Honda's warranties as my Accords are older

RE: failed oil pump

If they are offering a new block versus an old engine for the same price, I'd take the new block. You only have 15k miles more on your cylinder head than the used engine. 15k is not much for a Honda and I would take fresh cylinder walls and sludge-free oil cavities over a less-worn cylinder head any day. As long as you haven't snapped a timing belt (or chain) you should fine. I can't think of anything that commonly wears out on a cylinder head besides warping from a blown head gasket...
