head off...timing off!!!
 

Hello again guys and girls. so i have taken the cyliinder head off as the gasket was going[:@] anyways, after cleaning the head and grinding the valves in and everything i have noticed that

1) the engine is no longer at TDC (which it was before removing the head)
2)the timing will be off due to the cam being taken out.

My question is:

a) can i just set the engine to TDC with the head off by turning the crank till my white mark lines up again?
b) have a look at this pic and tell me if the valves are in the position they need to be in when returned to home.

forgot to mention that #2 exhaust and #3 intake valves are open.

Here's what you do...

Spin the crank so the timing mark is at 2 or 3 oclock. That will position all 4 pistons at mid-stroke.

Set the head in place & bolt it up. (Properly, using torque sequences & stages & whatever the Helm book says.) Since allthe pistons are at mid-stroke, you can spin the camshaft all you want without worrying about valves hitting pistons.

When you're ready to install the timing belt, first set the camshaft sprocket at #1tdc. That's arrow-UP and notches flat against the head's upper surface.

Then turn the crankshaft counterclockwise directly to TDC. Do not go around, just directly to TDC then install the belt.

that is what i was thinking. but looking at the picture, when the pulley is fitted the arrow is pointing up....this should make it TDC right? Also is there a key that slots in the groove between the pulley and the cam shaft? if so I havent got a clue where mine went:eek:

Yes, there should be a key for that sprocket. Unless it's built into the hole of the sprocket - it's not always a separate piece.

IF you need the key, it should only be a couple dollars at a dealer.
