Idle problems..help ?
 

Ok so i tried to adjust my 250 rpm idle and it didn't work out to well for me...My haynes manual is kind of confusing me...Here are the steps that it says in chapter 1...

1) Start the engine, and run it around 3000 rpm until the cooling fan comes on...

2)Stop the engine...

3)Set the parking brake, put it in park...blah blah

4)Disconnect the electrical connector from the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve...

5) Start the engine with the accelerator slightly despressed and stabilize the idle at 1000 rpm, then slowly release the accelerator until the idle drops off to normal speed...

6) Adjust the idle speed by turning the screw until it is correct...

7) Turn off engine, plug in electrical connector to the IAC valve, and remove the 7.5 amp back up fuse...


ok, so i got to step (4) and unplugged the connector from the bottom side of the iac motor/valve, while the engine was off, then attempted to start the engine as it says in step (5) and it started for a second then sputtered and turned off ((i noticed an odd smell, almost like engine coolant maybe, after this ordeal))) ...What is the deal ????? any info please, thanks!

Seems like that book leaves a few things out. It's trying to explain how to set you BASE idle.

First, make sure the throttle plate closes completely. The throttle cable must not hold it open at all. The mechanical stop screw must not hold it open any more than just barely enough to prevent it from wedging stuck closed.

Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks.

Get the engine completely warmed up, then unplug the IACV & jumper the SCS connector.

When you restart, it'll want to stall, so nurse it to keep it going. Adjust your BASE idle, which is lower than your normal operating idle. It's probably about 500 rpm?? (look it up).

Then youforce it to re-learn the idling behavior. Like this:

Reset the ECU & let the enginecool down.
Start engine without touching the gas pedal.
Let it warm up completely without touching the gas pedal.
