Malfunction Indicator Lamp

For the past couple weeks the Malfuction Indicator Lamp keeps appearing in my Honda 2003 Accord EX Coupe. The light appears when driving then randomly turns off a couple days later. Then it reappears. I read the manually and it said to tighten the gas cap, and i always do so that cant be the problem. It also said in the manual that it can reduce the fuel i use. And i have noticed that. In the past i would be able to get 150 miles easy on half a tank and now it only gets to about 130.

What is the problem and is it something i can fix myself?

By "malfunction idicator lamp" do you mean the "Check Engine" light? or do you mean "Maintenance Required" light? They have two very different meanings.

It is not the Maint Red'D. The icon looks like a pic of an engine. It is to the left of the battery icon.

Go to an AutoZone-type place where they'll plug in their reader & read the error code. It could be any ofdozens ofthings.

Get the actual code number (P0123) not just the guy's description of the problem.

Calm down. I'm simply reiterating the fact that the code needs to be read at AutoZone. that way the original poster sees it is recommended by more than one person;)

well i finally got it checked out and they told me that my "downstream" oxygen senor and fuel injection is bad and they wanted about 150 to fix the problem. well i left thinking 150 maybe a lil too much. well its been like 4 days since than and now the check engine light is off. Does this mean that the o2 sensor is randomly working fine then doesnt work?

What was the trouble code?

pham9006 03-20-2008 04:38 PM

RE: Malfunction Indicator Lamp

the code is:
P0141
O2 Senor Heater
Circuit Malfunction
(Bank 1 Sensor 2)

now the people who pulled this code at autozone told me that replacing the oxygen sensor my not fix the problem. They said the code tells where the problem area is, it does not pin point the problem. What should i do? go buy oxygen sensor and c what happens or pay 100+ for diagnostic to pinpoint problem?

It's always best to diganose a problem to find the defective componant. An o2 heater is an easy check. It should measure about 10-40 ohms across the 2 black wires. Failed o2 heaters are a fairly common problem.
