My check engine light is on! Help!
 

Well my check engine light is on and my speedometer stop working. Everything else works like temp, gas, and tach. The engine seems to be running a little different. I don't drive it much since it is my girlfriend's car but I am the one who fixes it. I will try to drive it here some tomorrow and see how it is acting. I also have not got a chance to check the CEL code yet but I will here in the next day or so but I was just wonderng if anyone had any ideas as to what the problem could be. I checked all the fuses in the fuse box twice and none of them are bad. Does anyone have any ideas?? Thanks,Will

If speedo isn't working, I'd look at the VSS on the tranny. Get the code and we can help you more.

Ok I will thanks! I can tell if the sensor is bad?? It does plug into the Transmission right??

It bolts to the transmission and there is a connector that plugs into it. It's almost directly under the distributor. A lot of time you can unplug it and clean the connect, then plug it back in nice and tight and it will work better than ever.

im not sure with 5th gen, but on my 4th gen it plugs into the trans right on top of the differential. If your car has VSS it could be pricey, mine cost $229 from the dealer, and they were the only ones who could get it and had to order from cali, i couldn't find it at any parts stores or junkyards either. I was gonna look for one online, but didn't have a credit card at the time.

Well I ran the codes and the speed sensor came up. Well after driving it around some more, the damn thing started working again. The speedo is working just like it should and everything else is fine. I am going to clear the codes and make sure that nothing else comes back.
