Should I turbo or H22?

I have a 1999 Honda accord witha F23A1 4 cylinder (automatic) engine. I don't want to build a race car but I would like some more power. Was wondering if I should piece together a turbo kit or swap to a H22? Which would be better in the long run? Which is more cost efficient?

My engine today.

RE: Should I turbo or H22?

in my opinion i rather go turbo and keep your engine. These engines are really strong, ive heard of some people going h22 and regreting it because it isnt as strong as a f23a1. You should go turbo and boost 8psi-10psi on stock internals and also you want to get a tranny cooler for the automatic. You prb hit arooud 220hp or higher with 8psi. with a h22 you only getting around 200hp stock. In the long run a new engine is always better but the f23a1 have a really really good life span. Also a h22 engine and tranny will cost you around $2000 plus unless you can install it yourself you looking at another $1000 in labor. For a turbou can get one from turbokentics or peice one together yourself. It can cost you anywahere from$1,000 to $3,000.
But you shold really boost the f motor. Its boost freindly it has low compression and ithink unless iam wrong has iron block. Also youshould get more torque with the f motor.

h22 = aluminum blockand frm sleeves and as a 10:1 or 11:1comp depending on the engine
f22/23 = aluminum block and iron sleeves 9.5:1 max compbutdepending on the engine its most likely lower then that
lower is better when running boost i view ideal compression being about 8.5:1, but in turn if you have the f23 thats 150hp that drops it about 10hp without a turbo

Ever since I got my car in 2002 I have wanted to swap in an H22. But the last few months, I have decided that it will just be easier and more efficient to rebuild my F22 and put a turbo on it. Besides, how much more fun is it to drive a turbo car? A LOT MORE:D

Thanks for the input everyone. It might be about 8 months before I start modifiying my engine, because I have new rims, tires, and coilovers on the way, but this info will definately help. I was thinking turbo to start with but I've heard rumors that F23's aren't worth turbocharging because a turboshortens the engines lifespan to3-4 years. Is this true? The car isn't driven but maybe twice a week anyway.

That could be true, if you drive like a jackass all the time. If you only drive once or twice a week, and those drives arent too terribly abusive, then it should hold up for quite a while.

Yeh, I hear ya. I know some people who abuse the hell out uf their cars. I never abuse my engine though. Never raced, done a burnout or anything like that. I mean why do it unless you build a car specifically for that?

Dont owrry to much about the lifespan of the engine. A friend if mine has a 92 honda accord ex manual. He got the car with 100,000 miles. He turboed the engine 8psi and still has the car working great today with 170,000 miles. But he keeps everything very maintainced, changes oil before its due and also when one things breaks he immmedialty fixes it. Anyway i have my accord and i admit i due beat on the car alot, but the thing can withstand a nuclear blast. I got 140k and its still runnning great. all i been doing is changing the oil every 3k.

Thanks for the input. I didn't really believe those rumors anyway.
