Temperature gauge
 

Every once in a while, But very semdomly the needle goes up almost all the way, but not quite. This has only happened about 4 times in 2 years, but I don't have leaks, and the coolant is there and is clean. other thatn that the needle sit just above the center as if at 55%.

now is that normal or should it always be in the center? what's going on ?

I think the older Accord have a few problems with gauges. If I were you, I would buy an aftermarket temp. sensor. If that sensor fails, and you get a leak your engine could be toast...the temp. sensor is very important.

My temp. on my 97 is about a centimeter below the half way point.

the needle should be a little bit less than half..maybe 40%-45%. YOu could possibly have a thermostat going bad.

Today for some reason the needle went all the way up. I put the heater on cause a mechanic once told me that it helps the heat scape. how much is a thermostat if i had to buy one and how much is installation? thanks any help is appreciated.

Thermostats are pretty inexpensive. And easy to install. It will sit right on the engine block where your radiator inlet hose meets it. remove the two bolts; pop it out with a screwdriver replace the gasket; install new thermo, and bolt it all back up. Bam done in 15 mins!

Follow the LOWER radiator hose to the back of the engine, beneath/behind the distributor. That's where the thermostat housing lives. You'll probably want to remove the big intake tube from the air cleaner.

What's a thermostat...maybe less than $20 from a dealer?

in response to thebrewmeister, it takes more than 15 minutes, you will have to drain the radiator before taking the t-stat out and use a genuine honda t-stat and gasket quality is much better than aftermarket, after installing when refilling radiator there is a bleeder valve on the t-stat housing that will have to be open while filling the radiator, when anti-freeze comes out of this valve close it and top of the radiator and your done.
