Timing Belt vs Drive Belt

I have a 2003 Honda Accord EX 4 cylinder with 140K.It runs great. I am wondering about the Drive Belt. On a 4 Cylinder it says inspect every 30K miles. How long should a drive Belt last? What's the difference between a Drive Belt and Timing belt. I see they call for a replacement of Timing Belt on 6 cyl at 105 K but don't use the term "timing Belt" for 4 cylinder engines. Thanks for you help.Jeff

RE: Timing Belt vs Drive Belt

The timing belt controls the timing and is located on the drivers side under a cover. The drive belt is the externally visible belt and that "drives" your alternator, A/C etc. by way of the crankshaft. It's typically a better idea to do the timing belt at about 90k since honda motors can and probably will bust up pretty bad if that snaps while you are driving...

The 2003 2.4l has a timing chain so there's no worries there.

That's right. I calledtheHonda dealer I bought the car from and they said "plan on $500" to replace the timing belt. That's when I decided to look at the manual and it did not have a "timing belt" listed in the maintenance schedule for a 2003 2.4L. Called another dealer and they said $99 to replace the drive belt. He told me about the timing chain. Either the $500 quote was trying to rip me off or they don't know what they are talking about. Either way they aren't getting the business!!

I agree with buying the Honda belt. They seem to last a long time without fraying around the edges or breaking......unlike some aftermarket ones I've had in the past.
