Valve Clearance
I have just done a valve adjustment on my 99' Accord LX. it has a 2.3L VTEC with a 5-speed. The valves are still quite noisy and i was wondering if there was a way to stop the noise. I did the adjustment tolerance that was stated in my Hanes manual and i was wondering if i should just go with a smaller tolerance (bring the rocker closer to the valve) because of the mileage on the motor i guess that it has worn the rockers and made the factory recommended adjustments useless. I have 132,000 miles on the motor.

RE: Valve Clearance
I have a 98 LX 5spd with 127000 and my valves were loud as a mofo before and just as loud after I adjusted them. I think it's just a noisy motor. Now I have a noise that sounds like I have a loud super charger whine. I have only had time to make sure it's not an alternator bearing going out. So if anyone has had this problem let me know.

RE: Valve Clearance
DO NOT MAKE THE VALVES TO TIGHT!!!! they will burn up. better that they are alittle loose then too tight. just like the manual says...there should be a little drag when you slide the gapper through there. some motors just have play in the valve train. if you switch to a thicker oil a lot of times it will quiet it down. i personally recommend lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer but thats kind of expensive. i know some mechanics that recommend using a straight weight oil in higher mileage motors.

right now im using Mobil 1 5w-30 because of the cold weather were i live so should i switch to Mobil 1 10w30 to quiet them down now that it is warmer out.

RE: Valve Clearance
That kind of an oil change won't quiet the valvetrain. A switch to German Castrol 0W30 might quiet things down as it is close to being a 40 weight. It's not an easy oil to find however and you may see a slight MPG drop. If it's running well and not using oil stick with the M1, if the noise is making you crazy sometimes a switch to 5W30 dino oil will quiet it down.
