RE: why do vtec car have more horse power

google vtec and read about it on wiki or somewhere. i has to do with different cam profiles at different rpms.

more aggressive cams is not the same as vtec, you will probably make more power than vtec, but it will be all the time where as vtec is just engaged at certian rpms

Head design and flow characteristics, camshafts, pistons, engine geometry...

Yea i read all bout vtec engage when it hits likes 4k or 5k rpm da rocker engages n lets it breath better....
it stays open longer n wont let da motor stress n all da good stuff u know,...lol

i mean is it just cuz of that rocker that is giving it 15 horse power....
so wen it opens at high rpms it giving it 15 horse power..

thanks guys...

RE: why do vtec car have more horse power

With vtec the engine effectively has two different sets of cams, one with a conservative valve timing configured to give good low and mid range performance with decent economy at lower and mid range rpm like any shopping trolley car, the other cam is configured to give higher performance at higher rpm when economy is also of relatively little concern. In operation the 'normal' cams operate the valves most of the time (shorter valve opening time, less valve overlap, maybe less lift), but at a specified higher rpm point the 'racier' cams overide the normal cams and give longer valve opening time, more overlap, and maybe more lift. It's like having'sports' cams but without the downsides of poor low end performance and economy.

Can't get more of a "spoon-fed" answer than that. Here's another spoonful: if you put a performance cam in your non-vtec then you will get the additional power without the fuel economy.

And please turn off the cap-lock, thanks.
