Carbureted 1984 Honda Accord hatchback will not idle??

Hi,

I'm new here and could use some help on an issue with my Honda that I've been dealing with for a while now. I have a 1984 Honda Accord hatchback that has 136,000 original miles on it, motor and all. It will always start, yet sometimes idle and then not, or not idle right away and then all of a sudden start idling again. I realize factors such as hot and cold, or rainy and dry, can affect the way a car runs, but it will idle in the rain or without, cold or hot. I might add that you can keep the car running fine if you feather the gas and two foot it at stoplights or slowing down. This problem really has me thrown for a loop as I've had it looked at and all the mechanic could tell me was that it needed a new carburetor....and still charged me for looking it over.

Thanks, Travis
