1989 accord Engine started making a popping sound

Hi I have 89 accord auto trans 132k runs fine. I was driving it today and it started making a popping sound from the engine. The noise increases with rpg and is slow at idle, but goes away when decelerating. The engine runs fine and no loss of power or missing. It runs completely normal like it always has. . Sounds like an old VW with an exhaust leak. I drove the car home at a slow speed and parked it.

Any ideas?

Larry

like you say ,, you might want to inspaect the exhaust system for leaks .. also chk the timing

If it's slow enough to hear individual pops, maybe look for leaks where the exhaust manifold bolts to the head. Further back, an exhaust leak wouldmake moreof a continuous rumble sound.

I'd also check your heat shield on the exhaust to make sure that it's tight/in place well... check your timing like desert said and make sure your plug wires are all on securely

Thanks one and all. Yup, two of the exhaust manifold bolts fell off or broke. Now for the fun job of fixing it.

Again, thanks

at least they are out (hopefully) since removing them is the hard part *L*

Ya, exhaust nuts are the worst. In looking in my repair manual I found out they are studs, not bolts. So, it's R & R the manifold and replace the studs. I'm going to take to my local repair shop and get it fixed.

Any idea on how much it will cost?

Yo DO NOT have to install studs and nuts,, just install bolts and washers..save yourself a lot of money .....I have done it before on a few occasions same the customers some money , no problems
