1991 accord with sluggish ride
 

Hi all..its me Pito...

I have a 1991 accord dx with sluggish take offs...it seems the the back brakes are engaged and not allowing the car to move any faster...
This happens everytime i come to a complete stop.
Any ideas?

I think you have rear drum brakes. They probably need rebuilding. Lift car and attempt to turn wheels by hand. They should turn easily w/ very little drag as the brake shoes should retract and not make contact w/ drums.

I just had this sort of problem with my 91 accord. Basically what I figured is that it seemed like it wasn't shifting into first on it's own. Because when I put it in first manually it would take off fine. Try that. If that's the case, FOR ME, I reset the idle and it fixed it, because I had messed with that before. Theres a few steps you gotta take to resetting it correctly, I would look it up online.

Grego, that's right if he has an automatic transmission.

Pito, if it's an automatic, and shifting is the issue, then you might also check the adjustment of the shift-down cable. That's the cable from your throttle-body down to the transmission. The lever at the transmission should begin moving immediately when the throttle begins moving. Possible to get that all farbed up if some misguided mechanic has tried to use the throttle cable to adjust idle RPM.

Dragging rear brakes...
Check whether it's the handbrake cable. It might not be the brakes themselves, but the handbrake cable might be rusted & sticking inside it's own housing. Move the lever, pull on the cable, check it's action.
