After a recent fuel pump replacement my 1996 accord stalls out when stopping if the gas tank is below 1/2. Could I have gotten a weak fuel pump?

More than likely the hose that attaches the pump to the sending unit is loose allowing some fuel to bleed off when the tank is low. At least that's where I'd look first.

What about the extra hose that attaches to the tank itself near the fill hose. Is that a vent hose? Or the several hoses above the pump outside the tank? Since I have to remove the tank to check those would it not be smarter to put a more expensive pump in since the tank is off? I had gotten a cheap one at Autozone cause I needed it in a rush.

Another possibility is the fuel inlet filter/screen. If that's not attached properly, the inlet to the pump will suck air from the middle of the tank rather than sucking fuel from the bottom of the tank.
