1999 Accord Torque Converter Specs

Ok so on top of my p1456 code, I am curious as to how the torque converter is supposed to engage on these cars. Recently after extensive periods of driving, the TCC will not engage until 50 mph or above. On start ups and such, it engages as low as 45. Anyone know if this is normal? Could it be related to my idle speed or emissions system? It locks up with the throttle but letting off, my TCC disengages, swoops down the rpms and bounces them back up if I am going above 42, and below 50. Anyone tell me what this is?

Check the download manuals in DIY forum, Online Manuals post for a download. This will have the specs on shift change.

Offhand, performance doesn't sound too far off. Lockup will usually occur lower than 45 mph under steady conditions. It may be difficult to detect lockup. A slight drop (100-150 rpm) is usual signal. Also on relatively flat roads, the rpm should stay constant when passing over a slight uphill/downhill if you have cruise control set.

good luck

It locks up normally. However, letting off the gas will disengage the lock up clutch if I am not going above 50 mph

Is there a way i can prevent it from unlocking when letting off the throttle? it locks up with my foot on the gas but when releasing the gas and going 42-49 mph it disengages the lock up

This sounds normal to me, but a review of 94 shop manual did not provide any guidance on downshift conditions except, computer selects lockup based on programmed response to load. Changing this is not impossible, but requires extreme effort.

good luck

So it changes the dynamics according to load put on the engine? Just wondering how to decrease the load on it then. It only happens after periods of driving in the city for about 30 min. But I am curious because it is something new. Also, the idle increases, almost as if the engine is working harder because of something
