Speculation

The only way I can conceive that the immolbilizer transmitter could be confused by keys/metal, before the correct key was inserted, was if the immolbilizer transmitter turned on before a key was inserted into the ignition. Like if it turned on when you un-locked and opened and closed your door for a short period. Like your dome light does. Pure speculation, but I don't think the transmitte turns on until at least the first part of the key has been inserted. A wrong key that was up against the ignition key housing, before the correct key was fully inserted, may potentially reflect a stronger signal to the immolbilizer receiver than the not fully inserted correct key. In a perfect system, the immolbilizer transmitter antenna would be so directional that almost all of it's energy would only land on the inserted key. Or the inside of the ignition housing, could be metal coated so no energy extended outside of it. I would be interested, if anybody finds out the the real answere.
