2005 Honda Accord Automatic EX-L(V6) vs 1994 Honda Accord EX
 

Hi Guys-

Wanted to ask experts, as you already know I have a 1994 Honda Accord EX with ~243k miles. I have looked at 2005 Honda Accord EX-L(V6) with nearly 185K and can get it for $4k.

In terms of comparison and based on your experience, should I stick to my own accord or can get 2005, any known issues or problem with this specific model?

If it's a good solid, reliable engine like F22B1, then I can sell mine and upgrade to 2005 :)

Any input, advice, suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

If the 2005 is in good condition, $4k is a good price and I would upgrade from the 1994. You may want to get a mechanic to do an independent inspection. See if there is a receipt for when the last timing belt change was done.

Some item:

• 240-hp, 3.0-liter VTEC V-6 engine
• Drive-by-wire throttle system
• 6 cylinder had timing belt that require periodic change.
• Leather interior
• Traction control system

There was a safety Recall: 2003–07 Accord V6 Power Steering Feed Hose Leak – VIN check is done to determine eligibility -Install an updated power steering feed hose kit.

Recall will be done free of charge, if have not been done yet? Is timing belt replacement same as F22B1 or complicated? Sure, will ask and look for all available receipts.

Anything else I should be paying attention to, while looking?

How are the transmissions on these cars?

Just me but the timing belt on the V6 is "easier" than the 4 cyl - you don't have to "play around" with the balance shaft and belt. Now you do have a few more "points of reference" to get right.

Again this is just my opinion and basing it off the 5th gen's I've owned and the 07 Pilot.

"Recalls" - should be done by the dealer free of charge.

Auto trans - Again only using my Pilot and readings. The 7th gen Accords are pretty solid but again how it is "taken care of" plays into that.

I don't think we will ever see late 80s-to-mid 90s Honda/Toyota longevity repeated. It was an amazing time for automotive reliability. I wouldn't own any automatic transmission Honda from 1998 - on, but that's just me. I do all my own work and doubt that I could successfully repair a late model auto trans. And I sure as hell wouldn't want to dump >$2K in a 10-y-o car paying for a trans rebuild. The good news is that 7th Gen cars were available with a stick in all years for the four, EX-V6 coupes, and in 06 & 07 EX-V6 sedans.

Bringing this thread back, since I sold my F22b1(sigh), now I am in a market for another Honda(civic or Accord) between $5-$8k range.

Question is, any particular years I should be staying away from or anyone's I should be jumping on? I would prefer a timing chain and a 4 cyl, as well as an A/T.

I just upgraded the 97 Accord for a 07 Accord....auto trans in the 97 was going and I'm getting too old to mess with things anymore.......if you want a 97 Accord SE coupe for cheap let me know.

Anyway the 07 4 cyl, 4 dr auto we got is a nice upgrade.....newer, a little more pep. In that price range you are going to have plenty of options. Starting in 03, the 4 cyl Accords came with a chain, just know that proper oil levels are needed to keep the chain from stretching.

At the end of the day it is up to you....good luck and let us know what you end up with.

The 2.4L 4-cylinder engine is used from 03 until now. I don't think there is too much of a change in the V6 engine either.

From generation to generation, the accord has gotten larger. I don't think there is anything significant mechanically. I think the maintenance on the vehicles is important, since the 03 is a 13-14 year old vehicle.

I'd recommend getting a used vehicle inspection by an independent mechanic. Hopefully you can find someone that specializes in Hondas in your area. I'd consider calling them up and asking about their experience with various generation accords.
