2015-2016 Honda CVT Software Update

Honda dealer told me today about Service Bulletin 16-053 that was released on Sept 9th (supersedes 16-053 from Aug'16). The revised bulletin lists a software update. I should have been notified but never heard anything from Honda.

This applies to 2015-2016 Accords with L4 engine and CVT, and to ANY 2015-2016 CR-V with CVT:
"Incorrect value in the PCM may cause a pressure problem in the CVT under certain conditions causing a surge in RPM because the CVT belt slips at highway speeds and eventually sets DTC-P1890 (CVT speed control system)."
I just checked my VIN on Honda's website and didn't find anything. So you probably should call your dealer to find out if you need this update, if you haven't been notified already.

Forgot to mention, if the error code is not set, the fix is to update the software.

If the P1890 error code is set, replace the CVT and then update the software. !!

Technical service bulletins are not recalls, unless specifically noted as related to a recall; generally, they are to help Honda technicians with known issues. Issues noted in TSBs do not necessary apply to all vehicles. Normal warranty applies.

Dealer gave me a printout with my VIN saying "Recall Information" and in the box it says "CVT Software Update".

Doesn't matter what it's called. If the error code gets set, the CVT has to be replaced so this is not an insignificant issue.

They'll check for the error code and proceed appropriately with my car after they get the part needed for a different problem.

Anybody take their '15-'16 Accord with 4-cyl engine and CVT in for inspection and the software update?

Did you need to have the CVT replaced because of an error code?

I've been waiting 2 weeks already for the dealer to get a replacement rear window for my '16 Accord Coupe so they could do that and the CVT in one visit.

I had at least one instance on the freeway where RPM suddenly spiked up, to ~4K, which is a symptom of the CVT software problem. Took my foot off the gas and RPM back dropped down, but and I don't want to blow the CVT, even if they should replace it because of their software mistake.

Just called the dealer and it appears they "forgot" to order the new glass. So who knows how long it's going to take, assuming they actually order it today...?? And in the meanwhile the CVT hasn't been inspected.
