The root cause. Inside of the broken VTA assembly
I am posting it for the benefit of future users who may be in same boat as me.
I eventually figured that the problem is the broken plastic gear inside the Vertical Transmission Assembly called VTA. This assembly has a 12 V motor and multiple gears that eventually lift the seat. All gears are metal except one that broke which is made of plastic. It had its teeth all worn out. I am wondering why on earth would they make it out of plastic. Had it been made of metal, there would be no issue. I posted some pictures showing the parts and what broke. I think you should be able to replace it your self but I got mine done by the dealership costing about $1200. Part itself costs less than 400 but rest is labor. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...0a57a5894.jpeg VTA assembly view 1 from one side https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...a9772db04.jpeg VTA assembly view 2 from other side https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...26a8d1566.jpeg VTA assembly view 3 https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...0d8f776d4.jpeg VTA assemble view 4 https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...0e1a5a7b9.jpeg VTA assemble view 5 https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...e5501826e.jpeg Removed top cover. step 1. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...c76fa140e.jpeg Removed gear assembly. step 2. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...16219422a.jpeg Removed cover. step 3. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...d3310ba86.jpeg Removed plastic gear. step 4. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...ce149b80c.jpeg Worn out plastic gear https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...428ff4d62.jpeg Close view of worn out teeth https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hon...eea316e90.jpeg Good teeth. |
Manual explaining how to replace VTA unit
2 Attachment(s)
Please find attached the manual that shows how to replace VTA unit. I don't think it would be easily do-able at home.
I posted some pictures as well in other reply. |
I don't know why it was made of plastic, but I typically assume it is a cost reduction.
It looks like the teeth are melted in just one section. I wonder if the motor overheated and the metal worm gear got hot enough to melt the teeth. This is a nice write-up with useful information. Thanks for the post. |

Thanks for the post. I posted another reply with detailed pictures showing what I saw when I disassembed the VTA. That post is not showing up. Is that because the admins have to approve it? |
Also, from the PDF I posted in other reply, it seems it is a known problem for accords models for the years 2013-2017
