3rd gear grinds
ok i have a 93 accord ex 145000 5speed and when i go from 2nd to 3rd i have to shift in the perfect exact spot (and slowly) or else it will grind . if im around 2500rpm it usaully doesnt do it but around 3000 to 4000 it i have to be perfect or else i get a little grind. ok so could it be a bad gear bad tranny or me just sucking at shifting and about what would it cost to get a rebuild or something thanks a lot |
RE: 3rd gear grinds
Probaly worn syncro. A fresh transmission fluide should reduce or eliminate grinding.

RE: 3rd gear grinds
i agree with the synchro

RE: 3rd gear grinds
Try this next time you go for a drive:
Shift from 2nd into neutral. Let the clutch out and bring the engine speed up to about 3500 rpm -- hold it there, put the clutch back in, and try to engage 3rd. If it slides into gear smoothly, it's a synchro problem. If it grinds and doesn't want to engage 3rd, it's an internaltransmission problem. |
RE: 3rd gear grinds
thanks guys i was out tonight driving trying some new things and the double clutch thing seemed to of work and also when i just shift it really fast it still grinds but sounds like very little
does anyone know the price of a synchro with labor ??? and how long will it last driving like this |
RE: 3rd gear grinds
Some people have had good results using GM Synchromesh fluid (or Penzoil Synchromesh). If it's too far gone, fluids won't do miracles...

RE: 3rd gear grinds
Before doing any transmission work I would recommend try changing the transmission fluide first.

RE: 3rd gear grinds
well thats what i was going to do but my friends gramps thinks hes a genious so i took the stuff back ,, he said if it only grinds one gear; that gear needs to be replaced |
RE: 3rd gear grinds
He may be right. But it's pretty easy to try new fluid first, before doing all the work of rermoving & dismantling the tranny.

RE: 3rd gear grinds
thanks for the help
ill try it and see what happens |

RE: 3rd gear grinds
A good synthetic MTF like Royal Purple or Redline may be sufficient to get a few more miles out of the worn synchro. The only "true" fix is to R&R the transaxle and rebuild it. If it was my car, I'd just double-clutch all my 2-3 shifts and 4-3 shifts. If you can't live with that, look for a relatively low mileage used unit from a salvage yard (make sure it has a guarantee of some kind, usually 15 or 30 days.) A competent trans shop can rebuild it for a couple hundred bucks if you only replace the really bad parts.

RE: 3rd gear grinds
well im gunna change the fluid mon. the first time i went to autozone they said it uses 10w 30 motor oil? for tranny fluid ? |
RE: 3rd gear grinds
Yes, 10w-30 engine oil was called for originally. But with a synchro that may have problems, try Penzoil or GM Synchromesh fluid. Or even genuine Honda manual tranny oil. Neither of those fluids existed when your car was built.
