89 Accord EXI or LXI, Which Is It

I inherited my dad's 89 Honda Accord about 15 years ago. The model emblem on the back identifies it as an Exi. However when I decode the VIN it shows it as an Lxi. The Exi emblem was on the car when my dad bought it new in Richmond BC, Canada, it has not been changed.

I remember having a discussion with a Honda parts department several years ago when I was buying something for it. They said it could not be an Exi and had to be a Lxi. I think he said the Exi did not start until 1990. Someone else thought maybe the car was actually an early 1990, released under the previous year's model year but mine has the pop up headlights which the 90 does not have.

So, what have I got? How did the Exi trunk emblem appear on an 89 Accord? Here are the details of the VIN:

Do the headlights "flip up"?

Me, I think the EX is a Canadian thing.

If I told you I have an original dealer brochure for the 1989 Honda Accord, would you think I'm crazy .....don't answer that :)

Yes, the headlights flip up, an 89 thing.

Maybe you are right, it was a Canadian designation, however it was manufactured in Japan. Google is of no help to me.

I wouldn't worry (EXi vs LXi)....just know that if you need something for the car that you make sure they know it is fuel injected.

Yes, I like the 3rd gens (86-89)......and I think the headlights flipping up is cool....of course I'm strange :)
