90 Accord cruise control issues

I have a question about the cruise control on my 90 Accord. Occasionally the cruise works perfectly, then will all of a sudden shut off. Sometimes when I try to set it, it turns on for a second then shuts off. This will continually happen until I quit trying. If I forget about it for awhile (5-10 minutes) sometimes it will work fine for the rest of my drive, other times I can't get it to set at all. Every time this happens, the cruise light on the dash is coming on and turning off when the cruise quits. I also have trouble with it when it gets real cold (0 or colder) Are there vacuum lines that need replacing? Is it my speed sensor? I'm not sure where to start.

Thanks for any help!

RE: 90 Accord cruise control issues

You did not mention if your Accord is a manual or automatic transmission but most likely your problem is a faulty brake lamp switch. The brake lamp switch has4 contacts and if one of them gets loose or worn, it can cause this problem (as well as problems shifting the vehicle out of park if it is an automatic trans). If it a manual transmission car, it could also be the clutch safety switch. At our shop, Accurate Automotive, we have specialized in Honda and Acura vehicles for over a decade andwe have replaced many more brake lamp switches than clutch switches for this problem. Hope this helps. Incidently the brake switch is Honda Part# 36750-SMA-003.

Before you go and buy un-needed brake switches, here is a link to help you correctly and accurately diagnose the problem;
The cruise unit is under the dash, just left of the steering column.

When testing the 'set' and 'resume' buttons, swivel the steering wheel 1/4 turn in each direction. That ensures the reel,under the steering wheel,is keeping good contact.

I totally agree with Dude.. It might turn out to be the brake switch or (clutch switch, if manual ) as Hondaed stated ..But as adviced by Dude ,, you need to DIAGNOSE before you start replacing parts..
