'90 Accord Speedometer Issue

The speedometer in my car is finicky to say the least. It will not work, but if you (don't laugh) smack the dash, the needle pops up and it starts working. Its not very accurate at all though. It will read 70 @ 2500rpm's one minute and th next it says 45 @2500rpm's. Any ideas on where to start?

Is Check Engine Light On?

If yes, the VSS may be intermittent. If no, the gauge panel may have internal faults. Been several posts on this subject recently. Try searching for threads.

good luck

I would focus on the dash/gauge, the reason is I don't think you can smack it hard enough to affect the VSS and transmission area. Until its fix you will have to keep smacking and driving. I had to laugh but good luck.

I have to agree. If it responds to smacking the dashboard, that sounds like a loose connection somewhere at the cluster (or inside the cluster).

I figured it was something loose in there. I suppose I'll leave it alone. Too much time and effort for the gain. There is no CEL either.
