Default SRS Unit Repair

Has anyone actually attempted to REPAIR an SRS unit?

There are countless threads about how to reset the unit, how to get the codes from the unit and how to replace the unit but I can't find ANYONE who has actually cracked one open to see what went wrong.

Is this impractical? I know that when I decide to look into that irritating light you can be damn sure Ill be opening that box.

I've heard about replacing or re-sealing some plugs on the side of the unit, for leaking brake fluid. Swapping parts like the accumulator or the motor/pump. I haven't heard of anyone who has dismantled the valve-body and done anything there.

Is there something else called a SRS unit??? I was referring to the little box behind the console that controls the secondary restraint system... It looks a little like a hard drive and certainly NEVER sees brake fluid, doesnt have a valve body, an accumulator or a motor/pump. Perhaps you are referring to the ABS unit?

I think Jim was thinking about the ABS unit.

Here is a thread where someone tried to reflow some solder and replace some capacitors.

Interesting, he took it pretty far. If I'm not mistaken the error I was getting was also a 5-2.

Too bad he didn't get anywhere. I would like to see a professional do that, with proper tests each component could be verified and ultimately the whole world would know what a 5-2 really means!

Geeezzz I feel pretty silly.

Yes I thought I read "ABS" in your original post. Guess I wasn't paying attention.

But doesn't the SRS system have a warranty "for the life of the car"?

Evidently not. I believe there was a recall for some cars, but according to the dealership, not for mine.
