93 Honda Accord Trans problems

Hello, just bought this car and suddenly acted like it was in neutral, no gears at all. messed with shifter under the hood and tightened the linkage i believe, then noticed lots of leakage. Under the care it looks like the shaft going into the tranny is coming out or the cover leaking. I think it is the shaft seal with the research i have done. Is this pretty hard to replace or should I trust to a mechanic? Thanks, Greg.

Are we talking about a manual or automatic transmission?
Which shaft are you talking about? Where exactly is the leakage?

It sounds like one of the axles might have popped out from the differential. Transmission oil will leak out and the axle will be disconnected from the differential that should be driving it.

Manuel and looking at it closer you are right, its the driver side axle. is this pretty easy or should I take it in? Thanks for your help!

There were no bolts holding the axle on and auto repair store says they have no idea on size and type of bolts. Anyone have any idea? Thanks!

Do you have any pic's of where these "bolts" are missing?

I had a 93 witha 5 speed. the shafts simple pushed past a snap ring as they mated to the transmission. On the other end was simply the large nut...no bolts.

Yeah, the inboard end of the drive-axle simply "snaps" into the transmission. Occasionally you hear about someone not snapping it all the way in. You have to pound on it just a bit & get it to snap.

Or maybe the snap-ring is worn. I think the shop manual calls for a new snap ring each time the axle is removed & re-installed.
