95 accord speedometer flicker problems

I got a 95 accord 2.2 vtec automatic

Recently I've been noticing my speedo flicker back and forth violently on hard accelerations or hard breaking
It will jump and fluctuate up and down about 20 mph difference
The gauge has always been about 3 or 4 mph faster then what I'm actually going which has saved me some speeding tickets

I'm running stock size tires so I know it has nothing to do with that

I'm going to fix the issue this weekend and it has to be either a speed sensor or a cluster gauge but how to determine which and I've never replaced a speed sensor so I don't even know where it's at and are they all transferable like from any accord 94-97 and does it have to be a automatic

I have a spare transmission in my garage so if the sensor is on the tranny I should be able to pull it from that one but I don't even know how to or where to find it. I've never had a issue with one

The symptoms are most likely due to the speedo's printed circuit board.

Usually if there was an issue with the VSS, you would get a Check Engine Light in most cases, and the cruise control wouldn't work.

My Accord 95 EXI Speed sensor did the same thing before dieing. it was fluctuating violently and after a long time D4 started flashing and CEL came on. when i went to buy speed sensor from dealer they said that part fails a lot for accord 95 and we sell a lot.

Is the vehicle still driveable with a dead speed sensor. If it goes and I'm far from home can I drive it home find without any other issues. And where is it located and how hard is it to change

Does the cruise control work when the speedometer is having issues?

when my speed sensor died, i was 100 mile away from home, CEL was constantly on, but car was drivable. it would give you an idle fluctuate or engine surge, apart from that no problem. it was very easy to change for a novice like me, only two 10 or 12 mm bolts, you need a long socket extension. lots of detail video on you tube how to change it. good luck

It is located on top of the transmission. You will probably want to remove the air intake hose and the distributor cap to get the wires out of the way. If you determine that it is the VSS look at the new one and you will be able to tell where the old one is. It is located on the upper back half of the transmission.
