Hi there

I had to change the ac compressor and to fill the gas the shops are asking to much$$ is it possible to fill them with the freon cans that they sell in the auto store and if its possible how many cans do I need. It's a 4 cyclinder and manual.

You need a few tools to charge the AC correctly:

1) vacuum pump
2) AC manifold gauge set
3) Can tap assembly w/ adapter to connect to ac manifold gauge set
4) replacement double-end capped PAG

If you've completed compressor installation, did you replace lost lubricant (PAG) that was in the removed compressor (2-4 oz), and you should replace the receiver/drier to scavenge moisture from system on startup. If you haven't added any replacement lubricant, you can add to compressor and replacement receiver/drier.

Charging procedure:
1) Pull vacuum as low as possible. Typically 28-30 inches hg depending on your elevation. Watch to see if vacuum holds. It should hold for 15-30 minutes w/ very little drop. If you loose the vacuum, don't recharge or you'll waste your refrigerant.

2) If vacuum holds, engage vacuum pump for 30-60 minutes to dry system as much as possible.

3) Charge R134a into vacuum through low side of manifold gauge set, as much as will flow. Then engage AC to pull remaining charge into system. it should hold about 23 oz or so. Spec amount should be on a decal under the hood.

Yes, you can buy a Walmart, low side Interdynamics charge system and charge 2 cans into system w/o vacuuming or added lubricant. If you don't add lubricant and vacuum, you will very likely toast your new compressor w/i a few days or weeks. Then you will need to replace virtually entire AC system to repair.
