99 4cyl AT with 263k miles- Last week I replaced the starter in my wife's car; the way it failed was weird....normal engagement on starting then dropping out followed by a loud grinding noise. Fortunately, the car was sitting in our driveway; I removed the starter and hooked it up to the battery on the pavement and energized the solenoid.....the bendix gear engaged, rotated and then disengaged about every half second. I watched it go through 10 smooth repetitions of this behavior. Napa had a remanufactured one on hand and I installed it without any problems. My mechanic friends have never experienced this problem either. Has anyone??
