99 Accord Coupe V6 - CEL with P0181
 

Hi All,

Just failed the smoke check on my 99 Accord V6 Coupe. The mechanic said that I have a "P0181 Fuel Temperature Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance". However, it looks like Honda does not even have this code. What gives? My smoke check is due in early October and I am starting to worry.

Any suggestions?

I would go to Autozone and ask for another code check. Unless you saw this code displayed, I would suspect a transcription error, perhaps 1108 (Barometric Sensor high input). I've never heard of fuel temp and suspect this may be a diesel engine code.

Thanks Texas Honda. I use my friends Auterra Dyno-Scan to check again. It can back with P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank1). This look like an O2 sensor... but what is Bank1?

This code means the ECU has detected low catalytic converter efficiency (too frequent changes in O2 sensor voltage). Typically, the rear O2 sensor should see slow changes in voltage indicating that O2 content is changing slowly. Rapid changes indicate the catalytic converter is not performing correctly. This code can be caused by a number of faults including exhaust system leakage (cracked exhaust manifold, etc), damaged or dirty air cleaner, or failed catalytic converter (either warm up converter or three way converter). It does not mean the rear O2 sensor is faulty.

This fault is difficult to absolutely confirm. Replace air filter and carefully check for exhaust system leaks. You can also "rattle" the converters to check for converter matrix breakdown. If you find no problems, reset the ECU and see if code returns.

You should also check w/ Honda. Some Hondas have extended warranty on the emission system. Depending on your mileage, you may get a replacement at Honda's expense.

A new converter may ultimately be necessary. They are very costly from Honda, but there are some decent aftermarket products. Ihave used an Eastern converter in my 99 Subaru to fix a persistent P0420. It has worked well, but there were some problems w/ heat shields fitup, support brackets, and an extra O2 sensor bung w/ no plug that I had to plug. DEC also makes aftermarket converters. Check ebay and convertergeek.com for direct fit converters if you decide you must replace your converter.
