Accord 2005 Timing belt replacement at 90k excessive?
Hey guys,
My 05 Accord Hybrid is at 90k. The dealer is suggesting I replace the belt. There is absolutely no problem that I can see or hear. But, they said it is "cheap insurance". The package is $1,200 (overpriced?). The manual says to replace it at 105k miles. What are your thoughts and experience on this matter? Thanks! |
I am guessing this is to replace timing belt. Take a look in your owner's manual to see if there is also a time for the maintenance, like 7 years or 105K miles. Also check that your car doesn't fall under the severe conditions category. I would replace that belt when it is due. A failing timing belt can look good one day and break the next.
I do most of my car work, so that price is high to me. You might want to look for shops that specialize in hondas or foreign cars and get some quotes. |
Thanks PAHonda. So far there is no noise coming from the belt and no visible crack, so I assume it's still OK and will be OK for a while. My coworker's 6th gen accord didn't get the belt replaced until 130k, so I think mine will definitely be fine at 105k. I'll stick to the manual's suggestion (105k under severe).

Look for an independent shop to do the work and save some cash, preferably one that will charge based upon actual time, not book time.

Most dealers charge about $700 for the job. $1200 way too much!

Thanks for the opinions. I will consult some local shops when the time comes. The main reason for going to the dealership is to maintain the resale value (private-party), since a lot of people still trust only dealers.
