Accord 98 85K miles - Timing belt when to change
I have a 98 Honda Accord which I bought at 45k Miles from a dealer in 2010.
The car has now 85 K Miles on it. I am not sure when the timing belt needs to be changed / or if and when the belt should be changed on this. Is it 100K ? Every 7 years ? or something else ? How much money would I need to put in ? I need a rough estimate- I am in Cleveland .. if City makes a difference in the cost. Please advise!! I don't want to be stranded on roadside with a broke car !! |
Put your car's information in your signature. Also specify if it is a V6 or a 4-cylinder.
In this case, the intervals are the same for the V6 and I4 engines. Under normal conditions it is 105K miles or 7 years. You are past due by time (by 7 years), but not number of miles. You may want to call your dealership to find out if the TB was replaced previously. |

Anyway, quote a couple years ago here for 4 cyl 1993 engine was $725 for the TB, $150 for the water pump = $875 before sales tax. |
It's not the stranding on the side of the road that is the problem. It's the physics experiment in mass and velocity that will play out in your cylinder head that makes preventative care a plus.
Yes, the timing belt and water pump cost money, but a seven-year interval, if you can't find evidence it has been done, is now at fifteen years. I agree, contact the dealer, but if there is no record of the service being done, change it. Yes, you will be potentially saving some money by not doing it, but the term "valve wreckers"exists for a reason. |
