Does the check engine light come on while driving?

Are the maintenance items up to date, like spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, etc?

What happens when you try to start it? Does the starter turn the engine?

If you have a timing light, then you can hook it up to each spark plug wire and see if you generate enough spark to flash the timing light.

Do you mean the spring that connects the coil to the distributor cap?

If so, the new cap should have come with one.

Here is the parts blowup for your distributor cap. #21 includes the cap, o-ring (also #15), and the spring. Maybe pick up a distributor cap at a dealership for ~$20.
