Advice on car getting too hot.

2000 Honda Accord EX. 4cyl 2.3L. My fans do NOT come on when the gauge gets up too about 75%. If I turn the AC on. Both fans come on. So it appears the fans function but they are turning on. Where should I start? thermostat replacement? Any advice is appreciate..Brand new to the forum.

There is a thermoswitch B which causes fans to come on when temp reaches about 195F. Yours is likely stuck open. In earlier models, the thermoswitch B is located on thermostat housing behind and below the distributor.

You can pull connector, install a wire jumper, turn keyswitch On, and fans should begin to run immediately. If they do, a new switch should fix your problem.

In my experience overheating w/o fans will not occur unless you're in high temperatures and running at very low speeds/stopped quite a bit. If you're overheating while driving at speed, you may have partially blocked radiator core or faulty thermostat (more likely).

good luck

Thanks for the response. It does not over heat while driving just raises considerably when I am stopped. Then i just turn the AC on and both fans turn on and cool it down. I will just need to find where the switch is and I will try the test. Thanks!!!

I did the paper clip test. The fan kicked on immediately. Looks like I need to replace the switch. Cheap and easy repair it looks like. Thanks for the help. I ll replace the switch and see how it goes.

Ok good news. I replaced the switch and now the fans kick on when the temp heats up. Thanks for the input. Worked like a charm!
