After market ignition key.. car wont start
 

My daughter lost her keys, a locksmith made her another one, for 6 months it worked fine, now the car wont start, I hauled it to a local garage, we have no honda dealer close, he finally figured out it wasnt firing after the first few cranks of the motor, it would fire then quit..then he noticed a key symbol light on the dash.. he thinks the after market key is the reason it wont start. any ideas? thanks!

Shouldn't be the key, if it's been working for 6 months. It would help if you said what kind of car you're talking about. I guess it's not a 1977 Accord, since they didn't start using immobilizers until about 1998.

sorry, 2000 accord..

it's possible the immobilizer failed, or it's completely unrelated to the key and ignition system at all.

fuel pressure? tank full of gas? :)

it's a 2000 Accord - but what trim level, (DX, LX, EX) and what engine?

I think I remember (from my 1998 EX) that the immobilizer lamp (green key) is supposed to light up for a second or 2 when you turn on the car.

Then if the key is OK the lamp turns off. If the key is NOT OK, the lamp begins blinking.

The immobilizer uses an RFID chip inside the plastic head of the key. It can get confused by other immobilizer keys (for different cars) together on the same key ring. They say it can get confused by large metal stuff like key fobs, but that didn't seem to be a problem on mine.

the mechanic did something to check the spark, he said why you first turn the key it would spark for about 2 seconds then quit sparking..
