air fuel gauge help

1997 Accord EX VTEC .. I installed a AFR gauge and got a good ground and a direct connection to the white wire of the pre cat 02 sensor ... however the gauge from Autometer constantly sweeps lean to rich, it does stay at rich during hard acceleration. And sometimes while just cruising it dips to very lean and the light will even go out until the gas is applied. I have no idea if its just a bad sensor or bad gauge .. anyone have any ideas???

I would say that everything is normal. The gauge tends to bounce around a lot, especially with the stock o2 sensors. When you take your foot off the gas and it goes really lean, that's fine too. Now if you had it mashed and it did that... ouch

In the end if you plan on using that gauge to tune, you'll want to go with a wideband sensor. Much more accurate.

It's supposed to do that during idle, cruise and some light accel. The ecu is programed to do it, the varying oxygen level helps the cat process co, hc, and nox. During harder accel it should read rich and when letting off the gas to slow down it should read lean.
