Auto Trans Rebuild
 

Hi Guys,

2005 Accord V6 CM6
I have an auto transmission about to fail. (320,000km) and I have been quoted horrendous amounts of money and just cant afford it. A friend of mine is willing to buy a rebuild kit on line and for me to pay him back when i can. I have had the engine out of another Honda so I am fairly mechanical but have never touched a geearbox. Time I learnt. I have seen some great videos on line but I can find any auto trans manuals on the net for this car. Are they all classified documents? Do they exist?

IMO, this is a job w/ too much opportunity for a critical mistake, resulting in a huge waste of effort. A good used trans is a much better option. '

Check w/ overhaul kit suppliers for overhaul manuals.

Thanks guys. Yeah I would like to go down the path of least resistance and a used trans would be good but finding one in this country is pretty hard. The auto trans specialists seem to get first dibs on used trans at the parts recylers so they can rebuild them and use them as swap outs for when guys like me turn up! So my options are to take the car to an auto trans specialist ($4000 plus, a little less if I drop the trans myself and take it to the shop), buy another car for about the same price (likely to have similar issues not far down track) or rebuild the current tans (rebuild kit from Rock Auto $400 New Zealand or about $280 US) . I simply cant afford a specialist to rebuild it and neither can I afford buy another car unless it's an absolute clanger. (I'm not driving around in a very high mileage car for nothing)

If i cant do this myself (and it seems the persuasion from almost everyone I have spoken to including this forum, is that this is one for the specialists...and their seems to be no manuals for the transmission publicly available anyway), then the car is dead just as soon the trans finally gives up. I'll be catching the bus after that!! So, I'm in that lose lose situation at the moment, In which case I have nothing to loose if I give it go for the price of the rebuild kit. In the absence of anything else, I guess I'll do it with the you tube videos. It would just be so much more help if a manual was available but I'm guessing that's a trade secret!!!

You said the transmission is about to fail. What is happening? What error codes are you getting from the PCM?

Since the OP is in OZ, I'm surprised he hasn't tried getting a good used one from Japan (JDM). You'd think shipping and the overall cost would be less, since it's fairly close by. Just a thought.

He could get it shipped from the US and spend around the same. Most of the JDM sellers ship to his location

Thanks Guys, There certainly are dealers willing to ship to New Zealand but the costs are very high. No warranty (unless you pay for return shipping (like that's going to happen)), a bit of gamble if the tranny is a runner or toast already, and if it is working ...for how long. At this point it is close to having a rebuilt in New Zealand with an 18 month and 25k warranty but as I said previously, that is all unfortunately a bit too rich for my blood.
