brake light problem

hello all, im new here. I have a 1996 accord and the brake lights dont work, i have checked the bulbs and all four are ok (the ones that are built in the boot lid), and i have checked the fuses near the accelerator pedal and the ones in the bonnet and they are all ok. using a volt meter there doesnt seem to be any voltage coming out from the pad the bulbs are fixed into. Im very confused and i dont no wat the problem could be. I also have another brake light which sits inside the car and faces out the rear glass which use to work. this was an intermittent fault and would sometimes work if i slammed the boot hard enough, however now this has also stopped working.

Is there any other fuses i am missing ? or perhaps a switch that controls the rear section of lights. i would really appreciate some help because its quite dangerious to drive without no brakes lights

RE: brake light problem

The first thing I would do is get a multi-meter and check that switch on the brake pedal. I think it's towards the top of the pedal assembly, but I don't recall 100%. The switch should be closed when the pedal is applied. Check for continuity on the switch and then for 12 volts on the white/yellow wire and ground.

That's where I would start anyway since you already checked the fuses and bulbs. Tell us what you find.

RE: brake light problem

what MBO1985 said ,, put you in the right tracks,, try a quick test.......push on the horn , if it works than we know the fuse is ok,, if horn does not blow,, chk the fuse on the underhood fuse box fuse # 30 , 20amp ,

if the fuse is ok . than like MBO suggested chk for power at the switch , located where he said , also like he said hook up the test lite to any ground and chk for power at yellow/white...

if you do not have power there, you got a problem in the wiring from the fuse box , to the pedal connector

If you do get power at yell/white,,,,,,depress the brake pedal and chk for power at the green/white and ground

If no power, you got a bad switch, get a 14mm and replace the switch

If you get power at green/white , than you got issue with wiring from switch to rerar lites .. if that's the case let me know and i can help you trouble shoot it

remember DO NOT disconnect the connector at brake switch when you are doing these tests
