Brakes Squishy/Groan Sound
 

This weekend the front disk brakes on my 05 Coupe with 120,000 miles began to make a new sound as I began to come to a complete stop. If I could combine a squish and a groan sound from the front brakes it would be about right. The car stops fine. The pads look like they are not worn out. They don't appear to be sticking. Anyone had this concern before and may be able to tell me what it is?

Occasionally, when car is not used for several days and damp/rainy weather, the rotors will flash rust. You will get squeaks, sliding noises, and popping as pads slide on rotors. It should not last long as use quickly rubs off the light rust.

I found it very difficult to assess remaining pad when nearing thickness limit w/o pulling the wheel. You should remove one wheel and inspect pads closely.

Well, I am in Florida where it rains every day, but I drive the car over 100 miles every day. Pads look good, but if needed, I can pull a wheel. The dealer looked at them about 2 weeks ago and also said they were good. I'll see if a pattern emerges. Today, so far it has been a dry day. Thanks for the insight.

Unlikely to be flash rust problem.

Occasionally, the dust shield around the brakes will bend and contact rotating parts leading to scraping noises.

could be some debris caught between the rotor and a pad? hard to say without driving it or a full brake inspection.

Check for a couple things...

Inboard pads have the little metal tab "wear-indicator". The inboard pad might be worn down thinner than the outboard pad.

That metal tab isn't the most precise thing in the world. I've seen brake pads where the tab begins to rub on the rotor when there's more than 2mm of pad-thickness remaining.
