A/C - Not Consistently Cold

I just got back from a trip to PA and MD. The weather was nice, but there were a couple of days when we needed the A/C.

The hottest day of the trip, and the A/C refuses to provide cold air. The next day, when the weather is moderate, A/C is cold.

Any ideas how to proceed?

Thanks,

Robert

Are both fans running when the system is on. Check or have the system pressure checked, if low on freon then it will not cool that well. Is the valve to the heater core closing all the way.

Can I Check These A/C Items Myself?

Thanks - those are excellent starting points.

Is the valve on the heater core something I can check myself, or take it in the the shop?

I have a 95, same gen as yours. Under the hood, on the pass side behind the tb you should be able to look down by the firewall and see the valve, hose in, hose out and a cable at the top. Make sure that the lever on the valve is "in line" with the hose on the engine side when you have the knob inside set to cool. As my name says I'm poor so in the summertime I have to disconcet the cable and manually close the valve ALL the way to keep warm water from getting into the heater core and not allowing the ac to really cool me off. Not that the cable doesn't work, it just doesn't close the valve all the way.

On my 95 Accord I found something that defies logic. The heater water valve doesn’t matter if it is open in regard to the AC temp or regulating heat. The AC wasn’t very cold for many years and I used to open and close the water valve for winter and summer, finally I adjusted the blend door and forgot about the water valve being open and now the AC is as cold as when the vehicle was new and the heat regulates off the control also. It seems the blend door does all the work and I don’t what the water valve purpose is for on my 1995.

I would check your AC pressures and adjust the blend door if the AC is still not cold.

Please let us know "where or how" to adjust the blend door?

See page 21-25 in the 94 shop manual that you can download from the spooner link I posted in the Online Manuals thread in the DIY section.

I am just too slow

The adjustment is on page 21-25 in the online manual for a 1994 Accord from a link in the DIY section here. That is what I used to adjust mine.

There's 1 cable from the heater control lever going down to the air-blend door. And you should have a 2nd cable going from there out to the water valve. When you turn the temperature control knob it's supposed to move BOTH the blend door & the water valve together.

Both Cables and adjustments should be on that page.
