Changing pwr steering fluid

Hey!

I am just curious how to change the power steering fluid, if its possible w/ basica tools and how much you'll need and such! Thanks:)

To drain the fluid completely, you can disconnect the return hose (the one without crimped fittings) and use a gallon jug as a catch can. If you remove the p/s belt you can turn the p/s pump pulley by hand in the normal direction of rotation. This will pump the fluid out, just be sure to add some new fluid to the reservoir so it continues to push the old stuff out. When the fluid from the return line looks new, you're pretty much done.

Starting the car to pump the fluid out would probably require quite a bit of coordination to prevent running the reservoir dry - not to mention what would happen if your attention was divertedfrom the stream of p/s fluid spewing into the catch can. It could be done, it just might get messy. Alternately, if you disable the fuel or ignition system 20 seconds of starter cranking would probably do it. Just don't run the stater too long at one time.

Lift the front of the car on stands, good & solid.

Disconnect a hose down low, on my '98 there's a hose going out to a cooler tube in front of the radiator. If possible, get a hose to extend this out to a bucket. Otherwise it'll make a mess...

Have someone start the engine. PS fluid will run out to the bucket. Turn the steering lock-to-lock a couple times to drain the fluid out of the rack. Stop the engine right away.

Take out the reservoir & clean it. There's a fine screen down in the reservoir that can get dirty.

Put back the reservoir, hook up all the tubing, fill the reservoir. Start the engine just long enough to turn the steering lock-to-lock twice. Now the fluid will be all foamy. Add fluid & wait (hour?) for the foam to settle. Repeat a couple times. Eventually the fluid willquit foaming.
