Cheapest tranny replacement

I have a 92 Honda Accord EX with just under 160K on it. The transmission (or something very close to it) crapped out. On my way home from work it kept slipping (this is an AT by the way) and I could only get itto stay in the lower gears (felt like I had maybe the 1st 2 gears). I drove home at about 25MPH that day. I recently bought a new Accord so I'm not in a huge rush to fix the 92, but it would be nice to have a spare car.

So my question is, what's the cheapest I could fix this up and just have a running car for? The engine and everything else are fine on this car. I wouldn't have a problem with, say, a junkyard transmission.
When I go shop around for somewhere to have the work done- roughly how much should I be getting quoted?
Thanks

Did the Sport or D4 light on the instrument panel begin to flash? Even if no, check for Transmission Control Unit (TCU) codes. Short service check connector, turnkeyswitch to On, and read D4 or S light flashes. Long flash is 10's digit and short flash is units (F-ffff = 14). It could be something simple or maybe not.

Cheapest fix if trans is bad is a good used transmission from a junked car installed by a specialist shop. Check car-part.com for used trans near you.

good luck

Shop is going to quote you roughly 6-8 hours to remove/re-install a new tranny. So the cost is going to depend a lot on their shop rate.... I would guess at around $500.00 parts/labor (if you supply tranny). A rebuild might be cheaper but that depends on what shops you ahve around your area... The cheapest way to get a tranny is from a junk yard...

Hi!
I don't know what the sport or D4 light is- the Check Engine light did not light up.
I think I have the Chilton's manual on getting the engine codes so I'll try that

on your dash when the car is in drive you'll notice a D4 light (the gear selector lights) or the sport light is just a little "S" that lights up and/or flashes to indicate issues sometimes.

is there something similar to this procedure for a 97 accord? my transmission has been slipping through ALL gears for about 3 years. Hasnt gotten better or worse, even after a flush. (No metal shavings or burned fluid was noticed)

Is it possible my issue is with a vacuum failure or TCU problem?

(sorry to steal your thread for a second)

I have no real knowledge in the tranny field, but I do have an experience somewhat like yours. Here is what happened.

On our 92 Spirit, we were taking a vacation and then suddenly it wouldnt shift out of second after a few hours of driving. It sat on the side of the road and while we waited for the tow truck we started it and it worked fine. As you know Mopar had some bad trannies, and basically what happened with us is that the transmission went into "safety" mode and wouldnt let it shift out of 2nd. So we put a tranny cooler on it and have never had a problem since. This is probably way off but oh welll!

Start your own thread if you have a problem. It gets too confusing chasing multiple problems in same thread.

good luck

Ah ok! No the D4 light didn't flash... and I dont think I have an S light. I've driven this car for years and I've never seen any of the gear indicator lights flash or any Sport light come on... are you sure this feature is in the 92's?
